College football preview: Notre Dame vs. Michigan State | Preview

Notre Dame’s big night against Michigan State was a game that had the potential to set the tone for the rest of the season, and for the nation as a whole.

But what could have been a national championship-winning game turned into an emotional rollercoaster as both teams played through their emotions, both players and fans, with no real clear path forward.

In that regard, this game is a perfect example of how Notre Dame should approach the rest on the schedule: it should be fun and exciting, not dull.

Here are some of the best quotes from the game.

— Notre Dame: The Irish offense was unstoppable against Michigan and should be more of a factor in the Big Ten title game, coach Brian Kelly said.

— Michigan State: The Spartans have to be more consistent this season, coach Mark Dantonio said.

The defense has to get back to the basics.

— Ohio State: Ohio State can’t afford to lose, Dantonino said.

It’s a big game for them.

— USC: If USC can keep going, the Trojans should be OK against Notre Dame, defensive coordinator Will Muschamp said.

They need to stay focused and stay positive.

— Iowa: The Hawkeyes’ defense was a little off, but it’ll get back on track against Notre and Michigan State, Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.

I don’t think the Hawkeyes can beat Notre Dame.

— Florida State: I thought they were good, but I’m not sure the defense is where we need to be, coach Jimbo Fisher said.

We need to come out and get a win, Fisher said, noting that he had some great comments about the Irish.

— Oklahoma: The Sooners’ defense could be a factor against Notre-Dame, defensive line coach Greg Byrne said.

But I don.

I’m going to leave it at that, Byrne said, while adding that there’s no reason to get too high on Oklahoma.

— Nebraska: Nebraska needs to play a great game, offensive coordinator Brian Kelly reiterated.

The Huskers should be a great team, Kelly said, and I think they’ll get a great win against Notre, he added.

— Washington: The Huskies need to play better than last week, but they’ll come out of the bye week ready to take advantage of a bye week, coach Chris Petersen said.

Washington is a great, fun team, Petersen said, but we need them to play at a high level against Notre.

— Arizona State: There were some positives to take away from the Sun Devils’ loss to Oklahoma, including quarterback Jared Goff, who threw two touchdown passes, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

But Arizona State’s defense will be tested by a strong Notre Dame offense, and the defense will need to improve as a unit to keep up with a Notre Dame passing attack that’s ranked No. 8 in the nation.

— Texas A&M: If A&M can win the Big 12 championship, coach Kevin Sumlin said, “it would be the biggest day of our life.”

— Clemson: Clemson’s defense needs to be better, defensive tackle Chris Worley said.

And we need a lot of things on the offensive side of the ball to get the defense going, Clemson defensive tackle Jordan Wilkins said.

Clemson is a really good team, Wilkins added.

But we need the offense to come in and play better, Worley added.

I thought we had some chances to win this game.

I would love to see us play really well in a game like this.

— Kansas State: Kansas State’s offense will have to play its best, quarterback Trevor Knight said.

He’s going to have to run the ball better than he did in last week’s loss to Notre Dame and his offensive line needs to do a better job of blocking, Knight added.

It’ll be a fun game for us to play against them, Knight said, pointing to the loss to Penn State.

— Wisconsin: It’ll probably be a different game than the previous one, quarterback Ryan Nassib said.

This one’s going really hard, he said.

Wisconsin will get their hands on the ball in a way they haven’t been this year, he continued.

We know how good the Huskers are, but there’s a lot to do, Nassib added.

If we can keep this thing going and get some wins, we should be fine.

— Clemson’s offense can’t stop the running game, and there’s going, “We can’t run the football,” Nassib continued.

So the game is really going to come down to how we can get it done, he explained.

The ball is going to be moving the ball.

We’ve got to make sure that we do it right and we’re playing fast, Nassibo said.

That’s the only way we’re going to get it going.

— Utah: Utah’s defense had to deal with a lot from the passing game, but the offense was a big factor against
